How many TV timeouts are allowed In Hockey?

These breaks are allowed due to television rights.

In other words, they allow TV companies to place advertisements while the game is on—and this is how the majority of major professional sports leagues make their money. 

Hockey is no different, but it’s interesting to note that hockey’s TV timeouts are limited to one per period.

This can be seen in rule 5 of section 6 of the National Hockey League’s 2019-2020 Rule Book: 

“One (1) television time-out shall be permitted in each period.” This timeout usually occurs after a goal or a power play (penalty). 

Most stoppages for injuries do not count as this timeout, so these can continue despite a TV timeout already being used in that same period.

The length of these timeouts varies depending on when they occur and which team has possession of the puck at that moment;

If they’re triggered by a goal or power play, the last two minutes 30 seconds;

If there isn’t possession yet, the last two minutes; if there isn’t a goal or power play before it begins, the timeout lasts 1 minute 30 seconds;

And if there’s no possession at that point either, it lasts 1 minute 15 seconds. 

The timeout doesn’t apply to overtime periods under NHL rules; only regular periods are eligible for TV timeouts.
