Simeone slams Courtois after row with Atletico Madrid fans in chaotic derby

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has criticized Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for his provocative behaviour.

Simeone made the statement after a heated 1-1 derby draw at the Estadio Metropolitano on Sunday.

The match, which saw Angel Correa score a dramatic 95th-minute equalizer, was overshadowed by chaos in the stands as fans reacted furiously to Courtois’ actions.

Courtois, a former Atletico player, appeared to taunt the home supporters after Real Madrid’s opening goal, sparking outrage among the crowd.

Objects, including lighters, were thrown onto the pitch, and masked fans directed their anger at the Los Blancos goalkeeper.

The situation escalated to the point that match officials temporarily suspended the game for security reasons.

Simeone, while calling for calm, pointed out that Courtois’ behaviour played a role in inciting the fans.

“We all have to help. If we provoke people, they get angry,” he told DAZN. “You can celebrate a goal, but not by taunting the stands and making gestures.”

Though La Liga may investigate Courtois, Atletico Madrid are likely to face punishment for the crowd trouble, according to reports from Spanish media.
