Nigerian Government Launches N50,000 Grant Program Under President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has initiated a program providing a N50,000 grant to support Nigerian citizens, aiming to ease economic hardships and boost small businesses. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to stimulate economic growth and provide relief.

Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale stated that the program will enhance agricultural productivity and strengthen the economy. Supported by the National Economic Council (NEC), it includes financial allocations and infrastructure projects across all regions.

Key aspects of the program:

• N50,000 grants to 100,000 families per state for three months.
• N155 billion for nationwide food distribution to ensure food security.
• Infrastructure projects like the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Trans-Saharan Highway, and railway upgrades.
• N10 billion to each state and the Federal Capital Territory for bus procurement and a Compressed Natural Gas uplift program.
• Support for labor unions and civil society organizations.

During the NEC meeting, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of cooperation among state governors to boost food production and meet citizens’ needs, highlighting the need for agricultural mechanization, high-quality seedlings, and solar-powered irrigation facilities.

Tinubu urged, “We must produce the food our people eat, create jobs, and generate wealth through export. We must deliver results at all levels. Report back to my office within seven days.”

President Tinubu has also highlighted several major infrastructure projects supported by the NEC, including the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Trans-Saharan Highway, both crucial for enhancing Nigeria’s transportation network and agricultural sustainability. The Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway and the Ibadan-Abuja segment of the Lagos-Kano Standard-Gauge Railway will receive full counterpart financing, ensuring improved connectivity and economic growth.

Additionally, the NEC approved a N10 billion allocation for each state and the Federal Capital Territory to procure buses and implement a Compressed Natural Gas uplift program, addressing both transportation needs and environmental concerns. Provisions were also made to support labor unions and civil society organizations.

In a call to action, President Tinubu urged state governors to collaborate closely to meet the citizens’ needs and increase food production. He emphasized the necessity of mechanized agricultural processes, quality seedlings, and solar-powered irrigation facilities. Tinubu stressed the urgency of these efforts, stating, “We must produce the food our people eat, and it will require coordination and intentionality among NEC members.”

He assured the governors of his readiness to provide necessary support and urged them to report back within seven days with their consultations and needs. This initiative aims to create jobs, ensure food security, and generate wealth through agricultural exports, fostering a more prosperous and self-sufficient Nigeria.

He said, “Our states must work together to deliver on the critical reforms required of us to meet the needs of our people. Time is humanity’s most precious asset. You can never have enough of it. It is getting late.

“We are ready and able to support you in the form of the mechanization of your agricultural processes and the provision of high-quality seedlings.

“We are prepared to provide solar-powered irrigation facilities to support our farmers across seasons, but we must now produce. We must produce the food our people eat, and it will require coordination and intentionality between members of the National Economic Council (NEC).

“There is nothing we are doing that is more important than producing high-quality food for our people to consume, buy, and sell. We create jobs in the production of it. And that is before we generate wealth by exporting the excess. It is not beyond us to achieve this for Nigerians.

“How much support do you need from me, and in what form? I am prepared to provide it. But we must achieve the result. We must deliver on our targets at all levels. Please report back following your consultations and submit to my office within seven days.”

On Thursday, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the wife of Nigeria’s President, launched a recapitalization grant aimed at empowering 37,000 women petty traders across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The initiative, part of her Renewed Hope Initiative’s Economic Empowerment Programme, was flagged off during a ceremony in Abuja.

During the event, Mrs. Tinubu, represented by Mrs. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, FCT Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, announced that 1,000 women from each state and the FCT would receive N50,000 each, amounting to a total disbursement of N1.85 billion. This grant is designed to help women petty traders cope with current economic challenges, expand their businesses, and create more jobs.

“Today, through the Renewed Hope Initiative Economic Empowerment Program, we are providing 1,000 pre-selected women petty traders per state with a grant of N50,000 each to recapitalize and contribute to the growth of the economy,” Benjamins-Laniyi stated. The grants are intended to assist these women in overcoming business challenges, thereby enhancing their capacity to contribute more robustly to the economy.

Senator Tinubu emphasized that economic empowerment for women remains a core objective of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), noting that her pet project continues to support the broader reforms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, also highlighted the importance of the initiative, describing it as a significant effort by the President’s wife to support women traders in expanding their businesses, thereby improving their livelihoods and overall well-being. Represented by her Special Adviser on Social Investments, Maijidda Musa, Dr. Mahmoud praised the investments made through the initiative in education, health, social investment, and agriculture, commending Senator Tinubu for her commitment to making this vision a reality.

This initiative marks a substantial step towards empowering women across Nigeria, providing them with the financial resources needed to enhance their businesses and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
