Serie A: Raphaël Varane appointed Como’s board member following retirement

Raphaël Varane has taken up a new role at Serie A club Como as a board member, the club announced on Saturday.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid defender retired from professional football in September following an injury during pre-season.

Varane, who initially joined Como as a player in July, will now focus on youth development, education, and innovation within the club.

“Varane will bring his experience and leadership to this new role, marking the next chapter of his career off the pitch,” the club’s statement said.

The 30-year-old Frenchman will collaborate with Como’s Head of Development, to help young players prepare for life beyond football through educational programs.

“His involvement will benefit not only the players but also the broader community,” the club noted.

Additionally, Varane will advise on product development strategies, focusing on integrating technology and improving fan engagement.

His appointment aligns with the club’s long-term strategy to build a stronger presence in Italian football.

Recall Como’s Indonesian ownership had previously brought in Cesc Fàbregas, first as a player and now as the team’s coach.

The club, newly promoted to Serie A after a 21-year absence, aims to continue its progress under the leadership of figures like Varane.
