Showunmi urges Nigerians to reclaim democracy in 2027 Presidency

Segun Showunmi, the convener of the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), has unveiled a plan for selecting Nigeria’s next president.

According to Showunmi, the process will involve consensus among ordinary Nigerians, with the chosen candidate to be presented to a political party under the umbrella of a new movement called “The Alternative.”

Showunmi, a former Ogun State governorship aspirant, explained that this strategy is aimed at challenging the growing dominance of “moneybag politicians,” whom he accused of corrupting the democratic process with stolen wealth.

He shared these remarks during a town hall meeting in Kano State on Thursday, where NOMC was officially launched in the North West.

Speaking at the event, Showunmi said, “What we have today are moneybag politicians who have continued to suppress democracy with their stolen wealth.”

He also underscored the importance of active citizen participation in governance, urging Nigerians to close the gap between the government and the people.

The people will dialogue and come up with a consensus candidate, we will then take the candidate and present it to a political party as the people’s choice.

“The people must choose wisely, and this must be ensured as the conversation continues. We must bridge the gap between the government and the governed.

“Citizens must not hate themselves and continue to feel underserved. We must do all we can to ensure that a quality candidate emerges in 2027 from among the people,” he added.

Showunmi condemned the role of money in Nigerian politics, accusing certain politicians of using their wealth to control democracy and impoverish citizens.

Today’s politicians want to use their money to steal democracy from us in order to keep us poor. To avoid this in the next election, we are warning Nigerians ahead of time against their antics using the platform, The Alternative.

“The second reason for creating the Alternative is to also prevent politicians from turning Nigeria into a one-party State. They are busy causing trouble in the major political parties so that we will not have the opportunity to choose in the next election.

“Stop short changing yourself by selling your vote. Stop trading your destiny for a plate of corn maze, Indomie, salt, etc. Politicians are using their money to take democracy away from you. So we are here to prevent it,” Showunmi stated.
